1994
was the inaugural Brickyard 400 Nascar race held at
the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Chevrolet
stepped up again this year and provided no less than
137 support vehicles for the race.
Although
the Monte Carlo was awarded the rights to be the "Official
Pace Car", twenty five 1994 Corvette convertibles
served as support vehicles.
The
Corvettes were primarily used to introduce the 43 Nascar
drivers in a parade lap prior to the start of the race
during driver introductions.
There
were thirteen Red and twelve Black convertibles used,
and most carried two drivers on the lap, with their
names displayed on the hoods.
They
also carried civic, Nascar, and Manufacturer dignitaries
on other parade laps, people like "the King"
Richard Petty and Bobby Allison, and Mayor Goldsmith
of Indianapolis.
It
is unknown how many of these cars still exist in "full
dress" since many dealers just removed the graphics
when they received the cars after the race.
Car
number 76 was used to carry the race winner, Jeff Gordon
on his victory lap.
For
more detailed information on this year, we have a great
story by noted Author Tom Commons posted in our Registry
Documentation Library for our Members to enjoy.
We
have also just added a link to a vintage video of these
cars in action at the race!
