It is
our great privilege to announce that
Ron McQueeney, Past Director-Indianapolis Motor Speedway/Photo
Operations Department has accepted our invitation to join
the Chevrolet Corvette Pace Car Registry as an Honorary Member
during the 2007 Corvette Pace Car Reunion in September.
Born in
Denver Colorado, but raised in the Indianapolis Suburb of
Plainfield, Indiana Ron started at the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway in 1972 as a staff photographer. In 1977 he became
Director of the
Speedway's Photo Department until his retirement in 2011.
His responsibilities as Director included staffing the photographers for :
- The
Indianapolis 500
- The
Brickyard
400 NASCAR event (starting in 1994), now called the "Allstate
400 at the Brickyard"
- The
Indy Racing League's traveling Photo Staff beginning in
1996
- The
US Grand Prix at Indianapolis starting in 2000 and ending
in 2007
- And
the upcoming Red Bull Moto GP at Indianapolis motorcycle
event beginning in September 2008.
Additionally,
Ron oversaw the massive (4 million + images and growing)
photo archives dating back to 1909 when the Speedway was built.
He was responsible for holding the Photo Safety meetings at
all of the Indy Car events around the United States and in
Motegi, Japan for the Indy Car Series Open Wheel events.
From the
early 80's to the mid 1990's, Ron had directorships with several
racing events including not only the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
but the USGP's at Detroit (1982-1988) and Dallas (1984), All
Penske Speedways including Michigan International, Nazareth
Speedway, and the Cleveland GP at Burke Lakefront Airport
to name a few.
His interest
in Corvettes started early in life with his next door neighbor
being involved in a Chevrolet dealership and driving an occasional
"Vette" home once in a while. He bought his 1st
Corvette, a
1975 Coupe in 1975, traded it for a 1978 Silver Anniversary
edition in '78 and added a 1972 Coupe in '79. A 1995 Coupe
was purchased in '95 and in 1998 Ron bought his 1st Pace Car
edition which he still owns with his wife, Marsha.
When the
Corvette was the Pace Car for the Indy 500 or any event at
IMS, Ron would be one of the 1st to get the car for a series
of photos for publicity use for both Chevrolet and Indianapolis
Motor Speedway.
"After
more than 36 years working at the Speedway, it is still a
great thrill to see a Corvette Pace Car leading the field
to the Green Flag" says McQueeney. "The car looks
like it could just keep on going and win the race each year
it paces."
Ron was
gracious enough to accept the Honorary Membership presented
by the Registry during the 2007 Pace Car Reunion and spoke
to the group during our dinner in Indianapolis about his past
experiences photographing Pace Cars over the years.
The Registry
congratulates Ron on his Honorary Membership and thanks him
as a key individual in helping to photo-document the history
of our favorite Pace Cars, the Corvettes !
